What Should You Consider When Installing a Basement Bar?

If you do much entertaining at home you may want to consider setting up a bar in your basement. Hosting parties from your full service basement bar is not only convenient, it is fun. Often basement space isn't utilized, and putting in a private basement bar allows you to use the space available in a way that will not only enhance the value of your home, but it will enhance your social life as well. There are a few things you have to consider when designing your basement bar.

Television

Television has become a large part of our lives over the years. Not many people can remember what life was before we had televisions and most don't want to try. When you put together your basement bar you are going to want to consider putting in a television. There are many different sizes and styles to choose from. A large enough model to be seen by a group of people without distracting from the overall look and feel of the room is best. Some people like to install projectors that are mounted in a well ventilated area in the room next door and use one wall for the screen. This type will allow your bar to double as a home theater.

Music

Most basement bars are used for entertaining and what good is a party without music? There are many ways to wire the room to have surround sound. This works great for the stereo as well as the television. Installing a sound system with speakers installed in the walls and ceiling is an easy way to keep from having to deal with wires showing. For those who don't want to install speakers in the walls and ceiling you can place speakers around the room and hide the wires with area rugs on the floor and art on the walls. Be very careful not to run your wires through a heavy traffic area unless you have them protected with a plastic strip to keep them from being broken by people stepping on them.

Seating

Keep in mind you and your guests aren't going to want to stand all of the time. Your bar can have bar stools but those aren't going to be very comfortable for longer parties. You most likely are going to want to look into a few chairs as well as a sofa or two for your basement bar. Make sure you keep an open and friendly look. The space may be best utilized by having a few bean bags tossed in the room but not many people feel at home in that type of atmosphere. Keep your guests as well as your space in mind when you purchase furniture for your basement bar.

Kitchenette/Bar

The most important part of a basement bar is the bar itself. You have several options available, and each should include a refrigerator of some sort to keep your drinks and snacks cold. You can go with an under-the-counter compact fridge or even a full size version. It really is a matter of taste and convenience. Keep in mind how you will be using the fridge when you make your decisions. You will also want to think about having an ice machine installed behind the bar and a small sink available for water as well as cleaning up.

Larger kitchenette type bars can be an option. This style adds not only the bar and fridge but a small cooking surface and a microwave for quick snacks. There are even compact dishwashers available that take up as much space as one drawer in your counter. You'll want a nice set of mugs, glasses, saucers, bowls, and various other dishes for your bar as well as smaller appliances including a blender and perhaps a coffee maker or espresso machine.

With as many options as there are you should take time with your decisions. Installing a basement bar is an improvement to your home that can increase its value. A basement bar can also be a place for you to relax and hang out so you want to make sure you are comfortable and all of the amenities you want are included.
